Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy explains which cookies and similar technologies are used on www.shopilo.co.nz, what information they process, and how you can manage your preferences. New Zealand has no dedicated cookie legislation. Where cookies collect personal information, the Privacy Act 2020 applies, and this policy is provided to satisfy the transparency requirements of Information Privacy Principle 3 (IPP 3) — including what we collect, why, and who it may be disclosed to (including recipients outside New Zealand, IPP 12).

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit a website. They allow the website to recognise your browser on a return visit and to remember certain settings or information.

In addition to classic cookies, similar technologies may be used, such as Local Storage, Session Storage or pixels (tracking pixels). Where these technologies store or read information on your device, we treat them the same way as cookies in this policy.

The legal position in New Zealand is as follows:

  • No dedicated cookie law: New Zealand has no equivalent of the European ePrivacy rules, and there is no statutory requirement for an opt-in cookie banner.
  • Privacy Act 2020: Where cookies collect personal information (information about an identifiable individual), the Information Privacy Principles apply — in particular IPP 1 (collect only what is necessary for a lawful purpose), IPP 3 (tell you what is collected, why, and who receives it), and IPP 12 (disclosure outside New Zealand only with comparable safeguards or your authorisation).
  • Our approach: Even though an opt-in banner is not legally required, we voluntarily operate a consent banner and do not set analytics or marketing cookies unless you accept them. This is aligned with the good-practice guidance of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner on online tracking.

2. Which cookies do we use?

Shopilo.co.nz uses cookies in three categories. Analytics and marketing cookies are only set if you accept them in the cookie banner.

Strictly necessary cookies — set without asking

Basis: these cookies are strictly necessary to operate the website, consistent with IPP 1 (we collect only what is necessary for the lawful purpose of running the service).

Without them, basic functions such as remembering your cookie choices cannot work correctly. They are set regardless of your banner selection.

Analytics cookies — only if you accept them

Basis: set only if you accept the “Analytics” category in the cookie banner. The information collected, its purpose and its recipients are disclosed here in accordance with IPP 3.

These cookies help us understand how visitors interact with the website. The data is evaluated in aggregated form and used to improve our service.

Marketing cookies — only if you accept them

These cookies are used to make advertising more relevant to you and to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

We review and update this cookie inventory regularly, at least quarterly. The complete, automatically updated cookie list can be found in section 3.

Affiliate links and third-party cookies

Shopilo.co.nz is a price comparison and coupon portal. When you click on an affiliate link, you are redirected to the merchant’s website. The merchant and the affiliate network (e.g. AWIN, Rakuten, CJ Affiliate) may set their own cookies on their own domains — those cookies are not controlled by Shopilo.co.nz. Please read the privacy policy of the relevant merchant for details of the cookies it uses.

Shopilo.co.nz itself sets no affiliate tracking cookies on its own pages. The cookies described above (section 2) are exhaustive.

5. Google Analytics

Shopilo.co.nz uses Google Analytics 4, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA).

What is collected?

  • Pages visited and time spent on them
  • Session duration and number of page views
  • Traffic source (referrer, search term, campaign)
  • Browser type, operating system and device category
  • Anonymised IP address (IP anonymisation is enabled)

Disclosure outside New Zealand (IPP 12)

Google processes data on servers in the United States. Under IPP 12 of the Privacy Act 2020, we only allow personal information to leave New Zealand where the recipient is subject to safeguards comparable to the Privacy Act. For Google Analytics this is achieved through Google’s contractual data protection terms, under which Google may process the data only on our instructions and for our purposes, together with the technical measures described here (IP truncation on our EU server before any data reaches Google, Google Signals disabled).

When is it active?

Google Analytics is only activated after you accept the “Analytics” category in the cookie banner.

Objection and opt-out

You can opt out of collection by Google Analytics by:

Further information is available in the Google Privacy Policy.

6. Meta Pixel

Shopilo.co.nz uses the Meta Pixel (formerly: Facebook Pixel), an analytics and advertising tool of Meta Platforms Inc. (1 Hacker Way, Menlo Park, CA 94025, USA).

What is collected?

  • User behaviour on shopilo.co.nz (pages viewed, clicks)
  • Conversion events (e.g. visits to merchant pages after clicking an affiliate link)
  • Audience signals for advertising on Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram)

Disclosure outside New Zealand (IPP 12)

Meta Platforms Inc. processes data in the United States. This disclosure outside New Zealand takes place on the basis of Meta’s contractual data protection terms, which we rely on as safeguards comparable to those of the Privacy Act 2020, and only occurs if you have expressly accepted marketing cookies in the banner (your authorisation, given after being informed here of the destination of the data).

When is it active?

The Meta Pixel is only activated after you accept the “Marketing” category in the cookie banner.

Objection and opt-out

You can opt out of collection by the Meta Pixel by:

  • withdrawing your acceptance in the cookie banner (section 7), or
  • objecting to personalised advertising in your Facebook ad settings.

Further information is available in the Meta Privacy Policy.

7. Managing your cookie preferences

On your first visit to shopilo.co.nz you are shown a cookie banner through which you can accept or decline analytics and marketing cookies. Strictly necessary cookies are set regardless of your choice, as the website cannot operate without them.

Your choice is recorded by our consent management tool CookieScript (Cookie-Script.com) and stored in the CookieScriptConsent cookie on your device. This allows us to respect your decision on every subsequent page view without asking you again.

Changing or withdrawing your choices

You can change or withdraw your cookie choices at any time, with effect for the future and without any disadvantage to you. Withdrawal does not affect processing that took place beforehand. You can do this as follows:

  • Reopen the cookie banner: click the “Cookie settings” link in the footer of this website to bring the banner back and change your preferences.
  • Browser settings: in your browser settings you can delete stored cookies or block cookies for particular websites. Note that disabling all cookies may also impair strictly necessary functions.
  • Provider-specific opt-outs: additional opt-out options are available for Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel (see sections 5 and 6).

Note: if you delete your cookies, your stored preference status is deleted as well. The cookie banner will be shown again on your next visit.

8. How long your choices are remembered

Your cookie choices are remembered for 365 days from the time you make them. After that period you will be asked again. This duration is a setting of our consent tool, not a statutory requirement — New Zealand law does not prescribe a validity period for cookie preferences.

You can change or withdraw your choices at any time before the 365 days expire (see section 7). Withdrawing is just as easy as accepting — via the “Cookie settings” link in the footer.
